A helpful tip for those that are remodeling their homes or those that are currently planning a remodeling project: Don’t run your heating and cooling system while the construction is underway! Your duct-work will thank you. The dust and debris from remodeling projects can quickly build-up in your HVAC system and reduce its energy efficiency. When the weather is tolerable, I make it a policy to stuff rags in all of the vents and then staple cardboard over the hole. I found out by trial and error this method keeps the duct-work cleaner. That means less clean up when the work is complete.
Filter Replacement is Crucial!
When you need to run the heating and cooling during a remodeling job, purchase a pleated filter for your furnace and check it often. Cheap fiberglass filters will allow too much dust and dirt to enter the furnace and a-coil, but even a pleated filter can become clogged quickly depending on the amount of dust created by the project. You might also try stapling cheese cloth over the returns to keep some of the larger particles out of the duct-work. In many cases, whether you cover the vent or not, you will need to have the air ducts cleaned.
